Sets in five to ten minutes to become a firm but flexible mold. Can yield excellent detail. Molds can be kept several days in a sealed, airtight container. Because it sets quickly, this product is ideal for demonstrations and workshops.

Accucast 880 Blue is a type of alginate that is fairly easy to mix and sets in 5-10 minutes. It has a somewhat short working life and will dry out and shrink over a couple of days. However, if kept in a sealed container and treated carefully, it can last a few weeks.

Mixing Accucast 880 Blue The manufacturer recommends mixing it 4 parts water to 1 part Accucast 880 by weight. We have had success mixing it 7 parts water to 1 part Accucast 880 by weight. We get the best results mixing this with a kitchen whisk in a bowl working slowly at first, then speeding up to about 3 beats per second, and mix for 1-2 minutes until the mixture is smooth but before it begins to set up. Work in a well-ventilated area and wear a NIOSH-approved respirator whenever working with powdered materials.

Pouring the Alginate Be certain that you are working on a flat and level surface. Pour to one side of the object in a flowing motion to keep air from getting trapped on the surface of the model. Vibrate the worktable so that any air bubbles don’t get stuck to the model.
Cleanup Allow the remaining alginate to dry completely in the container, and then immerse the container in a bucket of water. This will make it possible to remove the alginate in one large piece, rather peeling it out in chunks. Never pour alginate down a drain.
